AMC 20 Rear Axle Parts
The AMC Model 20 rear axle, standard in 1976-1986 Jeep CJ5, CJ7, and CJ8 models (plus Wagoneer, J-Series, and others), features a robust 8.875-inch ring gear, 28-spline pinion, and 12-bolt cover for solid performance—but its factory two-piece shafts are a known weak point under heavy off-road use. Popular upgrades include converting to stronger one-piece axle shafts, installing high-quality bearings and seals, regearing with aftermarket ring and pinion sets in ratios like 3.73, 4.10, or 4.56, and adding traction aids such as Spartan or Eaton lockers for better grip. Browse a full range of AMC 20 components—including precision bearings, heavy-duty shafts, ring & pinion gears, and advanced traction devices—to help you rebuild, reinforce, or customize your Model 20 for maximum durability on the trail or street.
AMC 20 axles have an 8.875" ring gear that bolts to the carrier with (8) 7/16" – 20 bolts. The pinion has a 1.625" diameter shaft with 28 splines. This axle can be visually identified by its 12 cover bolts. The carriers available support 2.76 and numerically lower ratios and 3.07 and numerically higher ratios.
